History of Konnagar

Konnagar boosts a very unique and rich history that can make any of its local citizens very proud even today. What makes its history truly unique is the fact that many great personalities of West Bengal region were associated with this place. This city first find mentioned in famous Bengali novel Chandimangal, which was written in 16th century. However, not much is known about the city. But then Konnagar’s history is less about violent ridden battles and crumbling of great empires and more about unique personalities and unique events associated with it. Many great personalities were associated with this place including Rabindranath Tagore, Maharshi Shibchandra Dev, Mahasweta Devi etc. The city saw the establishment of Bata Shoes factory in 1931. The most special thing about this factory was that it was first ever Bata factory to be set up in India. Today looking at the success of Bata factory it can be said that this Konnagar factory proved to be ultimate stepping stone in company’s success.

Administration in Konnagar

Civic administration in Konnagar is looked after by Konnagar Municipality, a civic body that is almost 71 years old, established way back in year 1944. Ever since its inception it has dedicatedly looked after all civic responsibilities assigned to it. Be it supply of drinking water to all households, or maintenance of sewage and drainage, maintenance of street light, or prevention of epidemic etc. It is indeed result of these decades of dedicated service that today Konnagar has evolved into a city with immense potential for economic growth. Konnagar Municipality covers 20 wards. The numbers of wards though were very less during its inception, but with passage of time number of wards were increased. Mainly due to unabated growth of local population. Talking about administration, then Konnagar Municipality is headed by Chairman and Vice Chairman. Their role is to guide and supervise 20 Municipal Councilors, who are obviously representing 20 different wards spread across this municipality.

Culture of Konnagar

Like all other cultures, people of Konnagar love to preserve their cultural heritage through various traditional festivals. Apart from traditional Durga Pooja and Kali Pooja, festival, they also celebrate few other local festivals. These local festivals namely Sakuntala Rakhsha Kalimata Puja and Sri Sri Raj Rajeshwari Puja are only celebrated in Konnagar town and its adjoining towns. These festivals have been part of Konnagar’s cultural heritage for more than 300 years now.

The economy of Konnagar is mainly driven by service sector followed by equally robust industrial sector. The fact that Konnagar’s economy is spearheaded by these two sectors, which are widely considered as major proponents of modern economy, signifies a lot about steady modernization of its economy.
